Electric Forest 2018 Returns with Two Wondrous Weekends
WRITTEN BY EUBIN JIN
As winter slowly transitions into spring, we begin preparations for the 2018 festival season. One that I, and tens of thousands of others have chosen to attend is Electric Forest 2018 in Rothbury, Michigan for two weekends. A legendary festival of gigantic proportions, Electric Forest has become a mainstay of festival world and one of the “must-go” festivals in the North American circuit. Most music festivals in the United states boast an amazing lineup over three days…Electric Forest sets the standard Let’s take a look at the initial lineup reveal for both weekends:
The String Cheese Incident – While not – a dance music act, The String Cheese Incident bring a funky vibe that complements the soul of the forest. Being a part of nearly every festival lineup since the creation of the event, they bring a level of experience and care to their sets that few others can match. Even if jam bands aren’t your thing, I highly suggest you check them out, they never disappoint.
Griz Live Band – One of my favorite artists and one that perfectly embodies Electric Forest, Griz is back and this time is bringing a live band. This set is one of the best combinations of electronica and live music that the forest has become known for. Beyond the music, Griz even takes time to run around the forest with us and really integrates himself into the community. It is definitely one of my must-see sets of both weekends.
Bassnectar –Becoming somewhat of the resident DJ for the forest, Bassnectar has been one of the mainstays for the last several years. His sets always draw the biggest crowds and is by far one of the biggest attractions for a lot of festival goers. He is playing both weekends though so don’t worry about missing your daily dose of Nectar and both sets tend to be one of the better sounding and better produced sets of either weekend.
Herobust – Now for all the headbangers out there, get ready to get busted. Herobust returns to the forest after a year off and I cannot wait. He always bring his own flair and is by far one of the most talented DJs to every hit the stage.
Notable mentions: San Holo, Louis the Child, GJones, Buku, Boogie T, Party Favor, Anna Lunoe, The Glitch Mob
Weekend 1 Only
Jauz – Bass house legend Jauz comes to Electric Forest for the first time. Jauz needs little introduction, his booming basslines and sublevel sounds have entranced listeners for years. Upholding the high energy of classic house music, he was able to intrigue fans with a bass-ier version that gave way to a boom of the bass and deep house subgenres.
Kayzo – You’ve all the seen the videos and highlights of Kayzo shows; this man knows how to put on show. Using a combination of hardstlye and dubstep, Kayzo is well-known for his high-energy music and high-energy antics on stage. One of the most hype DJs to play either weekend, you are in for a good time.
Cookie Monsta – Cookie Monsta, one of the most prolific dubstep artists around the world is finally coming to Electric Forest. He is one of the forerunners of modernizing bass music and helped shape it into what it is today. After an insane touring season last year ended with an absolute banger at Lost Lands, I cannot wait to see what he brings to Electric Forest.
Notable Mentions: Lil Dicky, Key N Krates, Jad Cicada, Kry Wolf, Moody Good, Noisia, Um…, Galantis
Weekend 2 Only
Rezz – Rezz has went from underground producer to worldwide success in a very short time. She once again plans to grace Electric Forest with her unique style of bass music and trippy visuals and is more than likely going to bring the house down. With her iconic LED glasses in tow, you are sure to be taken to another planet with Rezz are your guide.
Loudpvck – Loudpvck is one of the biggest trap producers of the last few years and is going to bring the noise to Electric Forest. He bring a modern style of trap with new kinds of sounds and samples that is, for lack of a better term, loud. You will have a good time at his set; his music is a party incarnate.
Notable Mentions: Testpilot, Boombox Cartel, Quix, Squnto
All-in-all, Electric Forest 2018 has a little bit for everyone musically. You have jam bands, hip hop and all different kinds of EDM from every subgenre. This may only be the initial reveal, but there is enough here to be a full lineup drop for many other festivals. This gets me extremely excited to see what they have in store for us next.
