Fusing thundering rock with fast-paced electronica to maximum effect is Los Angeles-based artist Saint Punk, who releases long player ‘ouroboros’ on Armada Music.

Born out of the lockdown-era, where one day felt like another, ‘ouroboros’ captures the frustration, the anger, the emotion, the trapped energy that made the past 18 months like no other period our generation has ever been through. An invisible war that raged online and IRL across so many different strata of our existence, Saint Punk has tapped into the dynamic to incredible effect across his 14-track album.

The album, Saint Punk says, it meant to follow seamlessly and continually, no beginning and no end, mirroring the daily grind of Covid and represented perfectly in the album’s artwork:

“The ouroboros to me represents a neverending cycle”,  he said. “Writing this album felt like Groundhog Day, waking up only to repeat the same events the day before. Some time has passed since I’ve written these songs though and the ouroboros also has come to represent new life for me. That’s how I choose to see it now. A neverending force of momentum, pushing and pulling, grinding against the grain, to be born into something worthy of the effort. Something with purpose. It’s everything I experienced and felt in 2020, from anger to sadness to euphoria, depression and more. It’s basically a journal put to music.”

‘ouroboros’ features collabs with artists like MXMS (‘Ghost Blood’), Illicit Ghost (‘I’m Not Gonna Think’), Holy Waters (‘Psycho Sicko’) and Yung Tory ‘Watch Me As I Dance’, and blends through from indie- and rock-tinged productions through to more glitching, twitching, dub-esque compositions. This is not an album that effuses hope for a brighter future; Saint Punk is brutally honest and relentless in bottling his despair. The whole piece carries an angsty, brooding, dark energy that manages to perfectly capture the current zeitgeist of Gen Z.

Saint Punk has been exploring the dance music space since 2018, channelling his rock music background into a new chapter of Grunge House. Remixing for 3LAU, MXMS and BLVK JVCK, as well as dropping unofficial remixes for The Chainsmokers, Travis Scott, Kanye West and Nirvana, Saint Punk already counts some of the biggest artists within EDM as support, including David Guetta, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Martin Garrix, Nicky Romero, Morgan Page and Steve Aoki.
