Singer and Songwriter PollyAnna is Bringing Poise, Power and Polish to Her Productions

By Kristine Kennedy

If you’re all caught up with recent Raver Mag articles, you know we posted a release on Ummett Ozcan and PollyAnna’s new collaboration, ‘Starchild’ last week. Well, we loved it so much we decided we had to get to know PollyAnna a bit more! Continue reading below as we dive into this powerhouse vocalist and songwriter’s life. We hope to see A LOT more of her work in the future!

Raver Magazine: How did you get into singing and songwriting?

PollyAnna: My father is a pianist and my sister was a famous singer from the Netherlands so I had a lot of musicians to look up to as a kid. I started playing guitar and writing my own songs when I was 12 years old. I always wanted to become a professional songwriter but it took a while before I got where I am now. I learned that being in music for the long haul requires perseverance and the ability to manage disappointment. I have never felt so free as I do now to create the music that I love.

Raver Magazine: Do you find that you usually start writing lyrics first or do you come up with the song first?

PollyAnna: I try to determine what the vibe is and then I’ll start with a concept for the lyrics. I will write the most important lines of the chorus and then go back to the melody. When the whole melody is finished I’ll fill in the lyrics for the rest of the song. I love working with strong concepts. I think I have about 2000 concept ideas in my phone. Sometimes I’ll hear something funny or beautiful when I’m Netflixing that inspires me to write a song. I am very much into lyrics and make it into a sport to keep shaping my lyrics until they’re airtight.

Raver Magazine: You have had the opportunities to work with some great talent in the music industry. What has been your most rewarding project to date?

PollyAnna: I loved working with Ummet Ozcan on Starchild. I’ve always admired Ummet as a musician and producer. I think his sound is so good and fresh so it was a big deal for me when this collab happened. When I heard the first demo version I took my headphones out and went for a big walk and listened to the song on repeat a thousand times. That’s when I fell in love with the song.

I have some pretty big things coming up both as a featuring artist and as a writer this year. So I can’t wait for those things to unfold.

Raver Magazine: What inspires you to write your lyrics?

PollyAnna: I love writing songs that are very specific about certain emotions or things that happened and I always try to write relatable songs. They can be things that I experienced 5 years ago or yesterday. I love songs that are witty, quirky and funny from time to time. Yesterday I wrote a song about dating someone who is bad for you but you can’t let go of him; and all the stupid things you’ll do when you’re in love with the wrong guy trying to get his attention. Another song that’s coming out soon is about feeling bad and drinking until you feel good again. And Starchild is about love that almost feels extraterrestrial; as something so pure and new it couldn’t possibly be from here.

Raver Magazine: Can you let us in on anything you have going on for the new year in 2019? You started off fantastic with “Starchild” and we hope we can expect to hear some more new music!

PollyAnna: Next month I’ll be featuring on a great trance track by Gareth Emery which is a huge deal for me. I am really looking forward to that release. And there is so much coming I can’t tell you about yet unfortunately. If you want to stay updated I’d love to invite you to follow me on my Instragram.

Raver Magazine Bonus Question – If you were stranded on an island and could only have three things with you, what would they be and why?

My guitar – To sing Kumbaya
My Iphone – Just so I could listen to the Joe Rogan Experience podcast
My neon yellow nailpolish – I don’t know, this color just defines me for some reason
