‘Secret’, ‘Long Way Down’, ‘Stars Collide’ and its limitlessly touching Noire Lee-sung released-today title single have all blazed a trail for it. The overture’s well and truly over though and it’s main event time: May 8 sees ‘Beside You’ – Somna’s first longplayer – make its big bid for 2020 glory.

The first block-release collection from the DJ, producer & AVA Recordings co-owner has been one long sought by fans. Throughout his production lifetime, Somna’s always been in his element when working in synergy with singers and songwriters. That ‘beside you’ connection that can bring voice, message and extra dimensions to his studio creations. That dynamic’s reached a new apex through his debut album that – almost without exception – is built around the producer/singer simpatico.

In pursuit of it Ben’s tapped the talents of many a remarkable songstress. Some he’s worked with previously (and one, notably, to an almost muse-like degree), whereas others mark first time artist/singer unions. There are those who Ben is essentially introducing to the electronic music scene, whilst others will already be known-names to ‘Beside You’s audience. Their single common denominator however is the ability to articulate Ben’s music into words and vocalise his innermost. Amongst the album’s co-production coterie you’ll find the inimitable likes of HALIENE, Jennifer Rene and Roxanne Emery – singers whose renown is already foundation deep in dance music. Newer-to-most names that Ben’s engaged for the album include gifted local talent like (fellow Canadians) Noire Lee and Emoiryah, and from those from further afield, including Sally Oh and BLÜ EYES.

While trance runs true through ‘Beside You’s veins, stylistically it explores the genre to its furthest reaches. Indeed if the album had one hash above all others, it’d be #contrast. Through the likes of ‘Rebels’, ‘White Noise’, HALIENE collab ‘Secret’ and ‘Constant Fire’, high altitude uplifters arrive thick & fast. Offering a sharp distinction are those of a more melancholic beauty, not least the album’s title track and its former single ‘Long Way Down’. Equally there’s also more pumping floor-minded fare – ‘Morse Code’, ‘Stars Collide’ and the LTN-paired ‘Dreamcatcher’ to pinpoint just three. On occasion the album also becomes simply more trance channelling, with cooler, more downtempo creations

like ‘More’, ‘The First Year’ and ‘Moon & Back’ adding context.

Of his motivations to write his first longplayer, Ben commented: “Beside You are two simple words that speak volumes. When I set out to write this, I really wanted to capture the emotions and feelings that encompass trance music to me – the warmth of that beautiful melody at the right time. Transporting us to a moment in our lives where you can remember every little detail, the feelings, location and even the sights and smells. I remember, having moved across the world from Canada to the UK, travelling on the train between Bournemouth and Manchester on my own and feeling very alone. I would listen to a certain Oceanlab song and in that moment, everything would melt away and I felt peaceful. My sincere wish is that this album can be like a light in your darkest times and a constant companion that is always beside you.

We were able to chat with Somma about his career and the creation of his LP earlier this week. Check out below what he had to say!

Raver Magazine: Congratulations is in order for ‘Beside You’! The tracks are fantastic! Can you talk to us about your inspiration behind creating this LP?

Somma: Thank you!  I’m so happy about the album and grateful to get to release something like this!  I’ve always wanted to write an album, to be creative outside of the confines of having to make “dance floor bangers” and this album gave me the platform to do so.  I also wanted to create a collection of music that could be with you during the highs and lows of life, comforting you like a giant teddy bear or a warm blanket.  That’s why the name of the album is “Beside You”.

Raver Magazine: SOMNA – BESIDE YOU – OUT TODAY – EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW INCLUDEDNow onto the single Beside You – what a captivating sound coupled with chillingly beautiful vocals. Can you tell us the story behind this one?

Somma: Noire Lee is a local songwriter / vocalist who I work with quite a bit and she came into the studio one day to record vocals for another artist and she had sent me a phone recording vocal idea long before that which I absolutely fell in love with and she started jamming on the piano.  We recorded the midi for the piano and some rough vocals and then I started the production process.  The rest just flowed easily and didn’t take long to finish at all.  I’ve worked on songs that have taken weeks to finish but this one just pieced itself together so naturally.  It has become one of my favorite songs I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of and we also got to shoot a music video!  We shot the music video over 2 days and also had some VFX work done (the door).  Huge respect to actors and people in the film industry, it takes SO much work to film even just a 3.5 min song.  I can’t imagine how much work goes into a feature film!

Raver Magazine: What is it like working with such powerhouse vocalists? Do you have one that you’d love to work with in the future whom you haven’t yet worked with?

Somma: I adore working with vocals, there’s so much feeling and emotional weight behind a good vocal and the creative possibilities with working with voices is so much fun!  Every vocalist is a little different as well and I suppose I’m pretty particular with the production aspect so it’s like a collaboration where I get to do my own thing, and they do theirs and it comes together in harmony.  There are so many vocalists I’d love to work with that I haven’t yet!  Nevve, Shy Martin, Adrina Thorpe, Emma Hewitt, London Thor, Skylar Grey, Betsie Larkin, JES and Astrid S are just some I would love to work with!

Raver Magazine: What brought you into the music scene? What was the defining moment for you where you knew “ok this is it – music is it”?

Somma: Music’s always been a big part of my life, as a kid I played violin, guitar, trombone, drums (most of which I have neglected so much now that I am back at beginner level now) but I never thought it would become my career.  The moment it did occur to me that I could turn music into a career though was probably around 2008ish when I was performing and producing as a different artist alias and got signed to a big label / agency before moving to the UK for 5.5 years.  That was kind of the “hey… I can actually make enough money to survive” moment for me.  I didn’t actually start the Somna project until around 2011 and my first track signing was actually with the wonderful people over at Black Hole Recordings!  It’s interesting that my first Somna signing was with Black Hole, and my first album is also with Black Hole.  They, alongside other labels I’ve released on have been so good to me and I’m so grateful they believe in my music.

Raver Magazine: Who is your musical muse – the one who inspires you the most?

Somma: I draw inspiration from all kinds of music and artists so it’s really hard to single out a specific inspiration.  But shout out to my wife because she’s always giving me feedback and support with my music, she’s never afraid to tell me if something doesn’t sound right and offer her suggestions!

Raver Magazine: Bonus Question – If you could be any animal in the world, what would it be and why?

Somma: A cat, they’re so cute!  They’re also little deadly ninjas when they’re not just relaxing and eating.
