“Places” ft. Raquel Castro Out Now

By Colburn Junus

Xenia Ghali is a songwriter, record Producer and disc jockey. She is the founder of Funky Sheep Records, and is known for her dance music singles and fashion vidéos that have topped the charts all over world. Raver Mag. had an opportunity to catch up with her to discuss her inspirations, her journey on becoming the dance music icon she is today and the release of her new track “Places” ft. Raquel Castro which is Out Now, this is what she shared up with us. Raver Mag. Tell us a little about how your career, how did you started and what got you into Producing and DJing? Xenia: I started being involved with music since I was 5 and was classically trained on the piano and the flute. Later, when I was 15 I picked up the guitar and the drums and started songwriting. I went to the UK to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Composition and Production. While I was there I taught myself how to spin on turntables. One thing led to another and I had the honor of playing at the Ministry of Sound in London. That was when I decided that producing and DJing was a career I wanted to pursue. Raver Mag. Music specifically, how would you describe your main style and how would you say using vocalists has helped your tracks and overall sound? Xenia: I love songs, I love harmony and melody, I love rhythm and I’m a very passionate person. I guess that is my style! Vocalists inspire me. I fall in love with voices and what a vocalist sounds like. A great vocal delivery is a huge part of a great song and the overall sound.   Raver Mag. Your new track “Places” looks to be having massive success. Every track, every video has a story behind it, what’s the story behind the video and what was it like to work with Ryan Kelley and Raquel Castro? Xenia: Thank you so much! I’m very excited about “Places” and I look forward to the project’s journey. The story behind the video is very similar to the story behind the song. It is something open to interpretation, fun, sexy, fresh and edgy. The video features a love story, incredible dancing and very visually appealing moments. Both Ryan Kelley and Raquel Castro were a pleasure to work with. They are incredibly talented individuals, great people and the chemistry between us was amazing. https://youtu.be/g7LZ8_BFYCc Raver Mag. We read that you did a panel on fashion and music at the Winter Music Conference. Where does your interest in fashion stem from and have you had any more involvement in that sort of area? Xenia: I always loved fashion because it is a beautiful means of expression with an incredibly rich history. My stylist Fani Polychroniou has been a great inspiration and has taught me a lot about fashion. I am currently working with G Star and Adidas in Greece and I was just at New York Fashion week. In addition to that I have had the pleasure of having worked with a number of fashion magazines. Raver Mag.  We saw you had previously worked with the likes of Pitbull and Wyclef Jean, how was working with those guys and what did they teach you that has helped you further your own career? Xenia: Working with Pitbull and Wyclef was truly beyond anything I could have imagined and a massive honor. Pitbull believed in the first record I produced when I moved to the States and signed me to his record label, Mr. 305. His belief in my work is something that gave me the strength to truly pursue what I do. He also taught me the importance of hard work. I worked with Wyclef on my second single “Get Dirty”. Wyclef is a true musician and an extremely inspiring individual. He taught me a lot about musicianship and artistry and I will forever be grateful for that. Raver Mag.  At what moment did you realise that producing and DJ’ing was what you wanted to do for a career? Has it always been the dream job? Xenia: I realized the moment I felt the ‘magic’ after my first big show at the Ministry of Sound in London. To be honest, prior to that moment I never thought I would be doing this as a job. All I knew was that I loved music. Catch the rest of our interview with Xenia Ghali in the March Edition of Raver Mag.
