“Make You Feel” is out now across platforms

A true banger will MAKE YOU FEEL something…make you want to MOVE. This track was inspired by Lil’ Kim’s vocal samples in ‘Quiet Storm’ and built around that concept. It evolved into a beautiful synth heavy story. With this being one of the first tracks on the record, I really wanted to make a statement.” – Maddy O’Neal

After serving up another summer of prolific performances across iconic locations like Red RocksElectric ForestLightning in a BottleShambhala and Burning Man, electro-soul powerhouse Maddy O’Neal is gearing up to unleash her VITAL SIGNS LP next month. And in the process, she’s taking a nostalgic turn, returning to the aesthetic roots that shaped her musical identity.

Due out on Tuesday, October 8, VITAL SIGNS is centered around themes of personal evolution, and navigating the emotional waves that come with a changing interior and exterior world. The 10-track package puts the self-taught musical polymath’s production prowess on full display: creating her own samples from scratch, playing the drum pad, keyboard, and synthesizers, and collaborating with vocalists and instrumentalists – effectively forging her artistic throughline within a wide swath of soundscapes.

O’Neal gave fans their first taste of VITAL SIGNS back in July with the LP’s lead single, “Locked In,” a collaboration with rapper and frequent GRiZ-collaborator ProbCause. Combining old school dubstep aesthetics with smooth flows from ProbCause, “Locked In” is an acute representation of O’Neal’s genre-blending mastery and an apt tone-setter for the worldbuilding of the VITAL SIGNS era.

Locked In” was followed by the brass-infused trap anthem “Run It Back,” a collaboration with Three 6 Mafia co-founder DJ Paul and jamtronica keyboardist/producer Jason Leech. Melding the virtuosic sensibilities of its three creators, “Run It Back” is a grandiose showcase of trunk-rattling production, shimmering keyboard melodies, and a heavy dose of Memphis hip-hop swagger.

Now, the versatile artist unveils the final LP single “Make You Feel,” a fusion of old-school hip-hop beats and futuristic bass production – a blend that pays homage to O’Neal’s beginnings as a vinyl crate digger, passionately hunting for that perfect hip-hop sample.

Make You Feel” kicks off with a sequence of sharp claps and vibrant, kaleidoscopic synth layers, laying down a dynamic and intricate rhythmic foundation. The track then crescendos into an explosive drop, featuring a seismic fusion of resonant 808 bass and gritty, modulated bass chops that elevate the song’s energy to new heights. The song also incorporates Lil’ Kim’s vocal samples from the Mobb Deep’s song “Quiet Storm” – the chants “make you feel,” “yo, it’s the real,” and “hip-hop,” serve as a tribute to the golden era of rap.

The track’s second drop diverges into a ricocheting arrangement of blazing basslines and sound design textures – a section that highlights O’Neal’s singular production skills and unending courage to evolve her music into unexpected directions.
