Mi Domina aims to uplift femme-artists in the dance music scene, and jumpstart a new Los Angeles movement
Nala partners with SiriusXM to unveil her new Mi Domina Radio quarterly mix series, which had its first edition on September 18
“Spiritual Psychosis” is out now across platforms
“With this track, I got to explore the capabilities of a Moog Sub 37 while also talking about a uniquely LA experience – cults and magic!” – Nala
LA-bred producer/vocalist/DJ Nala has spent the last decade cultivating her signature style of Riot Grrrl-inspired electronic music – a mixture of punk and club aesthetics that captures the essence of her native city’s luminescent edge.
Nala’s unmistakable musical identity has cemented her status as one of the underground’s most forward-thinking artists. The creative polymath has showcased her genre-traversing soundscapes at festivals like Coachella, Ultra Music Festival, EDC Las Vegas and Outside Lands; toured alongside dance music legends like Bonobo and Solomun; and collaborated with the likes of Dom Dolla, Blondie-frontwoman Debbie Harry, The Dandy Warhols, and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. After releasing a plethora of chart-topping records and racking up tens of millions of streams across her catalog, it’s no wonder why Beatport selected Nala for their coveted Beatport Next Class of 2024 (which champions a handful of exceptional emerging DJs).
Now, the boundary-breaking artist continues her pursuit of defining the Angeleno sound – a journey that begins with the relaunch of her record label, Mi Domina.
Initially launched in 2022 (but put on hiatus in 2023 following her dispersion into the electronic label ecosystem), Mi Domina’s second inauguration represents a re-centering of Nala’s artistic and philosophical goals – to uplift femme-artists in the dance music scene, jumpstart a new Los Angeles artistic wave, and platform left-of-center sonics that don’t fit within the industry’s narrow confines. Translating to “dominate me,” Mi Domina is an homage to Nala’s Italian heritage, and to a femdom culture where women are in charge and accepted as such.
Today, Mi Domina relaunches with the release of Nala’s new single, “Spiritual Psychosis,” a track that puts her punk-flavored approach to indie dance and acid house on full display. Combining Nala’s characteristic talk-sing vocal style with Moog Sub 37 synth lines and groovy drum rhythms, “Spiritual Psychosis” immerses the listener in a vintage, psychedelic atmosphere – a kaleidoscopic presentation made possible by the song’s analog basis (this is first Nala track using the legendary Moog brand) and a cohesive creative vision.
Inspired by Nala’s childhood in LA, “Spiritual Psychosis” juxtaposes the city’s lurid haze alongside its denizen’s cultishly holistic lifestyle to evoke the darkly-twisted magic that can only be found in the City of Angels.
“Spiritual Psychosis” kicks off with a thumping four-on-the-floor kick drum and deep, syncopated synth bass notes. The track then builds with stuttering hi-hats and claps before Nala enters with her first verse. Subsumed in lo-fi effects, Nala peers through the fuzz with hypnotizing vocals: “Met another girl who does magic tricks with a charm necklace, she can’t wait to tell me what her secret is, it’s hot gossip,” she sings in a fluctuating intonation, weaving together the track’s bouncy, swirling instrumentation into an angsty, occultish fabric.
In addition to the relaunch of her label, Nala has unveiled Mi Domina Radio, a quarterly mix series on SiriusXM that spotlights experimental, rock-influenced dance music. The series debuted on Wednesday, September 18 via Diplo’s Revolution.
